"Thina Sobabili" | Exploring Gender Roles, Identity & Affordability

"Mina Nawe" is a fashion and art collaboration by stylist, Slomokazi, and photographer, Paul Shiakallis. "Thina Sobabili" is a photo series under the "Mina Nawe" ongoing project.

The project showcases modern African style and beauty by exploring gender roles, identity and affordability. As a stylistic dynamic, models are cast as reflections of each other, evident in the clothing and colours worn, creating a balanced and engaging aesthetic. The items worn are chiefly thrifted, or vintage, to depict the effects of the current economic climate on style, to create a link between the past and the present; and, to tell novel tales of equality and androgyny of the contemporary African aesthetic.
